Naturopathy

Naturopathy (or naturopathic medicine) is a method of healing reinforced by traditional philosophies and practices with the aim of restoring the body’s own inherent healing mechanism (vital force).

The methods used in naturopathic medicine aim to support and enhance the body’s healing ability to heal itself.

A person’s health or ill health reflects the dynamic interchange between the mental, emotional, spiritual, social, and environmental landscape of the individual.

Naturopathy uses evidence from a variety of sources such as traditional, cultural, and scientific. Naturopathy incorporates different modalities such as nutritional medicine, herbal medicine, and food as medicine with diet and lifestyle counselling.

Naturopaths follow the six traditional principles outlined below:

1.The healing power of nature (vis medicatrix naturae)

The naturopath works with the body to stimulate the innate healing   mechanism to restore health and vitality.

2. First do no harm (primum non nocere)

Naturopaths avoid harming the patient by utilising methods that minimise risk and harm by applying the least possible intervention to diagnose illness and restore health. They avoid suppression of symptoms whenever possible as this generally interferes with the healing process.

3. Treat the whole person (Tolle totum)

Naturopaths take a multifactorial approach as health and disease is caused by a disruption to the harmonious and complex interplay of physical, mental, emotional, social, psychological, genetic, and other factors.

4. Treat the cause (tolle causam)

Naturopaths do not only treat the symptoms but investigate, identify, and treat the cause of the illness.

5. Naturopath as teacher (docere)

Naturopaths work with the patient by educating and guiding them on the nature of their disease and the process of healing and emphasize on self-responsibility for long term health.

6. Prevention (preventare)

Naturopaths educate patients on disease prevention and overall health maintenance throughout the various life stages.
